James Hurd
James grew up in the Manchester area before attending
Birmingham University and joining Chambers in 1994.
James practises primarily in employment law and personal
injury litigation.He undertakes Employment Tribunal, High Court and
County Court work throughout England and has also appeared in Scotland,
as well as in the Employment Appeal Tribunal. He represents a broad range
of clients covering the private sector (including PLCs and other limited
companies), the public sector (including local authorities) and individual
applicants.James advises in all areas of employment law including
unfair dismissal, breach of contract, transfer of undertakings and public
interest disclosure. He has a particular interest in discrimination and
diversity law, including race, sex and disability.Recently reported cases include Amicus & Others
v Beloit Walmsley Limited & Others EAT [2003] ICR 1396 dealing with insolvency and protective awards in collective
redundancy situations.James practises in all areas of personal injury litigation
with an emphasis on health and safety in the workplace, appearing on behalf
of and advising both Claimants and Defendants.
James was appointed Junior Counsel to the Crown - Regional Panel in 2007 for personal injury and employment work.
He was appointed to the Health Professions Council as a Legal Assessor in June 2010.
His interests include music (from opera to rock), classic cars and motorcycles, cinema, football
and travel.
